What compliance audit software does before, during and after an external audit
Compliance audit software prepares a company for an external audit against a standard such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA or PCI DSS. It keeps the controls, the recurring work behind them and the evidence that the work happened in one dated record, tells you which items would fail a sample before the auditor arrives, and hands the auditor the files they ask for first. It does not replace the auditor, who still tests and issues the report.
Complies is compliance audit software for companies of 5 to 200 people. Each framework is seeded with its recurring obligations, one cross-mapped control set lets a single access review count toward SOC 2, ISO 27001 and PCI DSS at once, and a readiness score per framework ranks what is still open. Growth, at $119 a month billed yearly, includes evidence collection, readiness scoring and all five frameworks. Scale, at $299, adds a Viewer role for your auditor and an audit export pack with the control map, obligation history, evidence index, risk register and vendor list as CSV files. Both prices are published and neither needs a sales call.
Complies assists with compliance workflows. It is not legal advice, and it does not certify you or guarantee audit outcomes. Your auditor decides; Complies gets you ready.
The three stretches of a compliance audit, and what the software has to cover in each
Before fieldwork, find the gaps yourself
Most failed samples are not missing controls. They are a quarterly access review done in month five, a policy nobody re-approved, or a screenshot with no date. The readiness score counts only what is recorded and current, and ranks the gaps so the month before fieldwork goes on the items an auditor would actually pull.
audit readiness softwareDuring the observation period, keep the proof dated
A SOC 2 Type 2 report covers a period, typically 3 to 12 months, so the auditor samples the work across it. Every completed obligation in Complies carries who did it, when, and the evidence link, which is exactly the population an auditor samples from.
evidence collection softwareAt the request list, hand over files, not a login
The first request list asks for the control descriptions, the population of completed controls and the evidence behind a sample. On Scale, the audit export pack produces those as separate CSV files, and a Viewer seat lets the auditor read the records without being able to edit them.
control mapping softwareCompliance audit software compared with the two things teams usually use instead
Buyers looking at audit and compliance software are usually replacing a spreadsheet and a shared folder, or deciding whether they need a heavier internal audit suite. This is how the three approaches handle the work an external audit actually tests, including where Complies is the wrong tool.
| What the audit needs | Spreadsheet and shared folders | Internal audit or GRC suite | Complies |
|---|---|---|---|
| A list of controls mapped to the standard | Typed in by hand, one tab per framework | Configured during implementation, often by a consultant | Seeded per framework and cross-mapped, so shared controls are done once |
| Proof each control ran on schedule | Files in folders, dated only if someone renamed them | Workpapers and testing workflows built for internal auditors | Every completion stored with owner, date and evidence link |
| Knowing what would fail a sample | Only found when the auditor finds it | Issue tracking after testing | A readiness score and ranked gap list before fieldwork starts |
| What the auditor receives | A folder link and a long email thread | Auditor portals, usually with extra seats | A Viewer seat and a CSV audit export pack on Scale |
| Time to start | An afternoon, then weekly upkeep | Weeks to months of implementation | Minutes: pick a framework and the first tasks are dated |
| Price | Your time | Quote-only; Vendr puts AuditBoard, now Optro, at a $45,895 median a year | $119 a month for Growth, $299 for Scale, billed yearly and published |
Read that honestly. If you run an internal audit department that plans audits, writes workpapers and tests controls across business units, you need an internal audit suite, and Complies is not one. If your auditor is an outside CPA firm or certification body and your job is to be ready for them, you need the column on the right, at a price a 50-person company can approve without a board vote. If you are also weighing the automation platforms that bundle an audit, compare them in detail on Vanta alternatives, AuditBoard alternatives and Thoropass alternatives.
Compliance audit software vendors, what each one covers and what each one publishes on price
We opened each vendor's own product and pricing pages in September 2026. Where a vendor publishes no price, the table uses Vendr's brokered contract data where a real sample exists, and says so.
| Tool | What it covers in an audit | Who it fits | Published pricing (September 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Complies | Obligations per framework, cross-mapped controls, dated evidence, readiness score with ranked gaps, a Viewer seat and CSV export pack for the auditor | Companies of 5 to 200 preparing for SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR or PCI DSS audits | Yes. Growth $119 and Scale $299 a month billed yearly; $239 and $599 billed monthly |
| Vanta | Integration-driven tests, evidence tracking, and auditor access to test source data, with a network of 100+ audit firms | Funded cloud startups that want automated tests and a guided audit | No. Vendr median of about $20,000 a year, February 2026 |
| Secureframe | Compliance automation with integrations, policies and audit coordination | Startups buying one framework first | Partly. Fundamentals starts at $7,500 a year for one framework; Complete and Defense are quote-only |
| Thoropass | Compliance platform plus an audit performed by its own in-house auditors, billed separately | Teams that want software and the audit from one vendor | Partly. AWS Marketplace lists the platform from $8,700 and a SOC 2 audit from $5,800 per 12-month contract |
| Optro (formerly AuditBoard) | Internal audit, SOX controls, risk and compliance modules for audit departments | Public and pre-IPO companies with internal audit teams | No. Vendr median $45,895 a year across 85 purchases, February 2026 |
| ManageEngine EventLog Analyzer | Log collection and audit-trail reports for PCI DSS, HIPAA, SOX and similar, built from system event logs | IT teams that must prove who accessed which system and when | Yes. Annual licenses from $795 for 10 log sources, priced by log source count |
Two notes. Log auditing tools and compliance audit software answer different auditor questions: the first shows what happened on your systems, the second shows that the controls around them were run and evidenced. A HIPAA or PCI DSS audit usually needs both. And Vendr medians come from negotiated contracts, not list prices, so treat them as a range to test a quote against.
What changes in the audit when the preparation lives in compliance audit software
The sample the auditor pulls is already complete
An auditor testing a quarterly access review asks for every instance in the period. When each one is a dated completion with evidence attached, the answer is a filter, not a week of digging through email and shared drives.
Surprises move to your side of the calendar
The readiness score flags tasks more than 30 days overdue as high severity and lists evidence that was never collected above evidence that has gone stale. You find the gap in week one of preparation instead of in the auditor's exception list.
One piece of work counts toward several audits
Growth runs SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR and PCI DSS on one cross-mapped control set. A single vendor review or access review is recorded once and shows up as evidence for every framework it satisfies.
The auditor gets read access, not your admin password
On Scale, the Viewer role lets an external auditor see the control map, the history and the evidence without being able to change a record, which is also what a careful auditor would ask for.
The second audit costs less effort than the first
Recurring obligations keep running after the report is issued. When the next SOC 2 period or the ISO 27001 surveillance audit arrives, the population of evidence has been building all year.
A price you can read before any call
Starter is $47 a month billed yearly for one framework. Growth at $119 adds evidence collection, readiness scoring and all five frameworks. Scale at $299 adds roles, custom frameworks and the audit export pack. Monthly billing is $95, $239 and $599.
Getting ready for your next compliance audit in Complies
Pick the framework you are being audited against
Choose SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR or PCI DSS. Complies seeds its recurring obligations, spreads the first due dates over six weeks and starts the readiness score at zero.
Record what you already do
Close the tasks that happened this cycle with a date and an evidence link, and approve the policies that are current. Nothing is pre-filled, so the score only moves when real work is recorded.
Close the ranked gaps before fieldwork
Work down the gap list from the top. Give each item an owner and a date; the score and the list update as each one is closed.
Hand the auditor the pack
On Scale, add your auditor as a Viewer and export the audit pack: readiness report, control map, obligations, obligation history, evidence index, risk register and vendor list.
Who this is for, and who it is not
A GOOD FIT WHEN
- An outside CPA firm or certification body is auditing you against SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA or PCI DSS, and the evidence lives in folders and inboxes today.
- You failed samples last time because recurring work was done late or left no dated proof.
- You run two or more frameworks and are tired of collecting the same evidence twice.
- You want a published price and monthly billing rather than a demo cycle and a 12-month contract.
LOOK ELSEWHERE WHEN
- You run an internal audit department that needs audit planning, workpapers and fieldwork testing. That is an internal audit suite such as Optro.
- You need log collection and audit trails from servers, firewalls and endpoints. That is a SIEM or log management tool.
- You need the audit itself. Complies prepares you; a licensed CPA firm or accredited certification body issues the report.
- You are checking software license compliance for a vendor audit from Microsoft or Oracle. That is a software asset management tool.
Compliance audit software questions buyers ask before choosing a tool
Compliance audit software keeps the controls, recurring work and evidence a company needs for an external audit such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA or PCI DSS in one dated record, shows which items would fail a sample, and gives the auditor the files they ask for. Complies does this for companies of 5 to 200 people from $119 a month billed yearly.
It depends on who audits you. For a company of 5 to 200 preparing for an outside SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA or PCI DSS audit, Complies publishes its price and prepares the evidence. Vanta and Drata fit funded startups that want integration-driven tests. Optro fits internal audit departments. Log tools such as EventLog Analyzer fit system audit trails.
Published prices run from $47 a month billed yearly for Complies Starter and $119 for Growth, which adds evidence and readiness scoring, to Secureframe Fundamentals from $7,500 a year. Most platforms are quote-only: Vendr reports medians near $20,000 for Vanta, $24,868 for Drata and $45,895 for AuditBoard, now Optro. The audit fee itself is separate.
Usually not. The software prepares you and organizes evidence; a licensed CPA firm issues a SOC 2 report and an accredited certification body issues an ISO 27001 certificate. Some vendors, such as Thoropass, sell an audit alongside the platform as a separate line item. Complies does not perform audits and works with whichever auditor you choose.
Three kinds, often together. Compliance audit software such as Complies, Vanta or Drata organizes controls and evidence. Log and SIEM tools such as ManageEngine EventLog Analyzer produce system audit trails. Auditors use their own workpaper tools to test and document findings. Internal audit departments use suites such as Optro.
No software makes you compliant on its own. You are compliant when your controls operate and an auditor confirms it. What the software does is make sure the recurring work is scheduled, done on time and evidenced, and that you see the gaps early. The readiness score is not an audit opinion; your auditor decides.
Yes, in two senses. HIPAA requires audit controls that record activity in systems holding electronic protected health information, which is a job for log tools. It also requires risk analysis, policies and documented safeguards, kept for six years, which is what compliance audit software such as Complies tracks. Complies does not store PHI.
Audit management software is built for internal auditors: audit planning, workpapers, testing and findings across a whole organization. Compliance audit software is built for the team being audited: it keeps controls running and evidenced so an outside auditor can test them. Many mid-size companies need the second and never the first.
For a SOC 2 Type 2, start before the observation period opens, because the auditor samples work across the whole period and evidence cannot be created after the fact. For ISO 27001 or a first SOC 2 Type 1, eight to twelve weeks before fieldwork gives time to run each recurring control at least once and close the gaps.
Yes, on Scale. It adds a Viewer role, so your external auditor can read the control map, the obligation history and the evidence index without editing anything, and an audit export pack that downloads the same records as CSV files. On Growth, any member can download the readiness report to share.
