DEFINITIONS FIRST, OBJECTIONS SECOND
What is compliance management? Questions, answered plainly
Compliance management is knowing every obligation your company has, implementing controls that satisfy it, and being able to prove both on demand. Below: the definitions, then the questions buyers actually ask about Complies, including the ones that are really objections.
Compliance management is the ongoing practice of knowing every obligation your company has under the frameworks and laws that apply to it, assigning each one an owner, implementing controls that satisfy them, collecting evidence that the controls actually operate, and being able to prove all of it when an auditor or customer asks. In a small company it usually lives in spreadsheets until the first real audit makes that unmanageable.
Compliance management software replaces the spreadsheet-and-reminders version of that practice with one system: an obligation tracker with a compliance calendar, a control map that cross-references frameworks like SOC 2, ISO 27001, and GDPR, an evidence store with owners and due dates, and reporting such as a readiness score. The judgment calls stay human; the software does the tracking, chasing, and counting.
Usually the trigger is external: an enterprise prospect asks for a SOC 2 report, an EU customer sends a data processing agreement, or a security questionnaire lands in the sales inbox. At 5 to 200 people, hiring a $120,000-a-year compliance lead for that is premature, and doing it by hand eats roughly 120 engineer-hours per audit cycle. Software that runs the coordination part-time is the middle path.
No and yes. Complies assists with compliance workflows: it tracks obligations, maps controls, collects evidence, and shows you where you stand. It is not legal advice, it does not certify you, and it does not replace your auditor. For SOC 2 an accredited CPA firm issues the report, and Complies gets you ready for that audit with everything organized when the auditor arrives.
Because Complies is self-serve. The incumbents run sales teams, demo calls, and annual contracts, and their prices reflect that motion. Our prices are on the pricing page, you can pay monthly, and you start the same day. Growth at $199 a month is $2,388 a year, which is roughly a fifth to a tenth of a typical Vanta or Drata year.
It depends on your gaps, and anyone who promises a fixed number before seeing your stack is guessing. What Complies gives you from day one is a readiness score and a ranked gap list, so "how long" becomes a work plan you can staff instead of a mystery. Teams starting from a reasonable security baseline commonly reach SOC 2 Type 1 readiness in 6 to 12 weeks of part-time work.
You add the framework and your existing controls cross-map automatically. Most SOC 2 controls satisfy ISO 27001 requirements too, so your ISO readiness score starts pre-filled, typically around 60 percent, instead of at zero. Evidence you already collected is reused wherever the second framework accepts it. That cross-mapping is included in every plan from Growth up.
A compliance product has to model good compliance. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, access is role-based and logged, you can export or delete everything on request, and our subprocessor list is published on the security page. We offer a DPA on the Enterprise tier and answer security reviews as part of procurement.
Yes. Monthly billing has no lock-in and you can cancel from the billing page in one click. Yearly billing discounts about two months and renews annually with a reminder email 30 days before renewal. Your data stays exportable either way.
Regulated enterprises with a dedicated GRC team and hundreds of custom controls are better served by OneTrust, AuditBoard, or Hyperproof, and we would rather say that plainly than sell you the wrong tool. Complies is built for 5 to 200 person companies where compliance is somebody's side job and the goal is passing real audits without hiring for it.
