HIPAA compliance audit software comes in two kinds, and most buyers need both. Log and SIEM tools such as ManageEngine EventLog Analyzer (annual licenses from $795) cover the audit controls in 45 CFR 164.312(b) by recording who touched which system. Compliance platforms such as Complies ($47 to $299 a month, published) or Accountable ($199 a month and up) cover the risk analysis, policies, reviews and six years of documentation that an OCR investigation asks for.

The phrase "HIPAA audit software" confuses people because HIPAA uses the word audit twice. One meaning is technical: the Security Rule requires audit controls, which is logging. The other is the audit of you: an OCR investigation after a breach report or complaint, a customer's security review, or a third-party assessment you commission before a hospital signs your contract. Search results mix the two, so a practice manager and a healthtech CTO can type the same words and land on products that solve different problems. Work out which one you are actually buying before you book a demo.

What does HIPAA require that software can help with?

HIPAA requires audit controls that record and examine activity in systems holding electronic protected health information, a regular review of that activity, an accurate and thorough risk analysis, written policies and procedures, and documentation kept for six years. Software helps with every item, but no single product type covers all of them well, which is why the category splits.

Here is how the requirements line up against the two kinds of tools. The citations are to the Security Rule as it stands today; the January 6, 2025 proposal to overhaul it has not been finalized, and the federal agenda now targets July 2027 for a final rule.

HIPAA requirement Citation Log or SIEM tool Compliance platform

Regularly review system activity records164.308(a)(1)(ii)(D)Produces the access and event reportsSchedules the review, records who did it and when, keeps the evidence

Read the table from the bottom up and the pattern is plain. The log tool proves what happened on your systems. The compliance platform proves that your program around those systems was actually run. An OCR investigator, or a hospital's security team reviewing you as a business associate, will ask for both.

HIPAA compliance audit software compared by price

We opened each vendor's own pricing page in September 2026. Where a vendor does not publish a price, the table says so rather than repeating a directory estimate.

CompliesCompliance platformHealthtech and digital health teams of 5 to 200 running HIPAA, often alongside SOC 2$47, $119 or $299 a month billed yearly; $95, $239, $599 monthly

Prices in this market change without notice. Secureframe, for example, raised its published starting price from $7,000 to $7,500 a year in September 2026. Check the vendor's own page on the day you buy, and treat Vendr medians as a range to test a quote against, not a list price.

Do I need HIPAA audit software or a HIPAA compliance platform?

You need audit logging if you run your own systems that hold ePHI, and you need a compliance platform if you have to show a program: risk analysis, policies, reviews and their history. A covered entity running an EHR its vendor hosts often needs little logging of its own, while a healthtech company hosting patient data on AWS needs both.

A few common cases make this concrete. A 12-person dental practice on a hosted practice-management system relies on the vendor for most system logs; its real exposure is a missing or stale risk analysis, which is exactly what OCR's Risk Analysis Initiative has targeted, with thirteen investigations completed by April 23, 2026. A 60-person digital health startup storing records in its own cloud account needs CloudTrail or a log tool for 164.312(b), plus a program that schedules the quarterly activity reviews and keeps the evidence. A business associate selling to hospitals will be asked for both in the security questionnaire, usually next to a SOC 2 report.

What should HIPAA compliance audit software track?

It should track the risk analysis and every update to it, the risk treatment plan, policy approvals and review dates, workforce and access reviews, business associate agreements, security incident records, and the evidence for each recurring task with a date and an owner. The test is simple: could you hand an investigator six years of history without rebuilding it?

That last point is where spreadsheets fail. A spreadsheet shows the current state. HIPAA asks you to retain documentation for six years from its creation or the date it was last in effect, whichever is later, so the history matters as much as today's status. In Complies every completed obligation keeps who did it, when, and the evidence link, and the readiness score for HIPAA counts only work that is recorded and current. Nothing is pre-filled, so the number can go down as well as up.

Two limits are worth stating plainly, because a buyer should hear them before a sales call rather than after. Complies does not store PHI and does not collect system logs, so it sits next to your log tool, not in place of it. And it does not certify you: there is no official HIPAA certification, and any vendor badge that implies one is marketing.

How much does HIPAA compliance software cost for a small practice?

For a small practice, HIPAA compliance software with published prices costs roughly $169 to $299 a month for a HIPAA-only platform such as Accountable, or $47 to $119 a month for Complies. Integration-driven platforms aimed at startups sit higher: Vendr reports a median of about $20,000 a year for Vanta. Log tools add a separate line, from $795 a year.

The number that matters more is what the software replaces. For most small practices that is a consultant's annual risk assessment plus a binder that nobody updates between visits. Software earns its price when the recurring work, such as access reviews, policy re-approvals and the annual risk analysis update, happens on schedule and leaves dated proof, because that is the gap OCR settlements keep describing.

Do not forget availability. The Security Rule's general requirements cover the availability of ePHI, not only its confidentiality, so a patient portal that goes down is a HIPAA concern as well as a customer one. Teams that host their own portal usually keep a record from uptime monitoring as evidence that outages were detected and handled, and file it with the contingency plan.

How to choose in one afternoon

Start with where your ePHI lives. If it all sits inside a vendor's hosted system, ask that vendor for their audit log capabilities and their SOC 2 report, and put your own budget into the program side. If you host it, price a log tool against your number of log sources first, because that cost scales with your infrastructure, not your headcount.

Then write down every framework you will be asked about in the next year. If HIPAA is the only one, a HIPAA-only platform is a fair choice. If hospital customers are also asking for SOC 2 or ISO 27001, pick a platform that cross-maps controls, so one access review counts toward all of them. The HIPAA compliance framework in Complies is seeded with the recurring Security Rule obligations, and the same control set carries SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR and PCI DSS from Growth at $119 a month.

Finally, look at the risk analysis on its own. It is the most enforced requirement and the one most often done once and forgotten. If that is your immediate problem, our comparison of HIPAA risk assessment tools covers the free HHS tool and the paid options side by side, and HIPAA risk assessment software in Complies keeps the analysis as a living register instead of an annual PDF.

If you are preparing for an outside audit across several frameworks at once, compliance audit software in Complies keeps the evidence dated, ranks the gaps before fieldwork, and on Scale gives your auditor a Viewer seat and a CSV export pack. Every plan and price is published, and you can start without a sales call.
